Yuanmingyuan New Park, located at No 164 Lanpu Road at the foot of Shilin Mountain, is a large-scale comprehensive cultural tourist attraction built by the Zhuhai Municipal People's Government with an investment of 600 million yuan to welcome Hong Kong's return to the motherland.
It opened in February 1997 and is composed of 18 sites simulating those of the Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) in Beijing on a 1:1 scale.
As one of the first 4A scenic spots in China, it covers an area of 1.39 square kilometers and are comprised of royal palaces, gardens in a Jiangnan (the region south of the Yangtze River) style, and European structures in remembrance of the grand scene of the Summer Palace. Its air of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) attracts tourists from China and abroad.
In October 2012, it became one of the first 4A-level scenic spots to open to citizens and tourists at no charge. Later the Zhuhai City Cultural Center moved there.
