Gongbei Port in Zhuhai, a city in South China’s Guangdong province, witnessed a notable rise in the number of cross-border travelers in the first half of this year, thanks to the recovery of cross-border commuting, business exchanges, and tourism between Zhuhai and Macao.

Statistics from the Gongbei Border Inspection Station indicates that over 64 million travelers were handled in the first half of the year, marking a 6 percent increase compared to the same period of last year. The daily peak reached over 460,000 travelers, setting new record.

The primary groups traveling between Zhuhai and Macao include individual tourists, cross-border commuters, and business travelers. There has been a significant increase in the number of Chinese mainland residents traveling to Macao for tourism. Regular commuting between residents of Zhuhai and Macao remains stable, serving as the mainstay of cross-border traffic.

The ongoing cultural and tourism activities have further promoted family trips, parent-child tours, and short trips among young people, highlighting the vibrant cross-border lifestyle and economy of the region.

He Shujuan, an official from the Gongbei Border Inspection Station, noted the unexpected growth in traveler numbers, particularly during holidays and weekends. Measures such as dynamic opening of inspection channels, additional mobile duty posts, and optimized passenger guidance have been implemented to minimize clearance times and enhance the travel experience, He said.

With the summer months of July and August approaching, Gongbei Port is expected to face its peak travel period of the year. The influx of students, family tourists, and short-term visitors from other provinces to Macao is likely to break previous records.

Additionally, the ongoing events and activities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will contribute to a sustained increase in cross-border business, family visits, and tourism, keeping the port's traffic at a high level
