Guanniang Plum Wine, which originated in Wanzai sub-district of Xiangzhou district, has recently been selected as one of the 100 products included in the 2023 Guangdong Intangible Cultural Heritage Souvenir List.
Guanniang Plum Wine has a history of over 100 years and is a well-known brand in Zhuhai and Macao's liquor industries. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Guan family was renowned for their knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine. They opened a medical hall in Macao and operated a business agency in Wanzai that specialized in Cantonese herbal tea, Chinese herbal medicine, and health wines.
In 1998, Guan Shaohui, a descendant of the family, turned the family agency into a tea restaurant. During this time, the restaurant's homemade plum wine gradually gained popularity through word of mouth.
As the demand for plum wine grew, Guan decided to establish a winery under his family name, thus introducing Guanniang Plum Wine.
With its rich plum aroma, smooth texture, and apricot flavor, Guanniang Plum Wine has become renowned for its unique taste. Its flavor is a result of generations of refinement and innovation by the Guan family. Today, it has become a signature product that represents Xiangzhou, and it continues to gain widespread recognition, becoming a cultural heritage of Guangdong.
In November 2020, Guanniang Plum Wine was included in the district-level intangible cultural heritage list for Xiangzhou, and in January 2021, it was selected as one of the top 10 souvenirs in Xiangzhou.
In June 2021, it was named as a city-level intangible cultural heritage in Zhuhai and in January 2023, Zhuhai Guanniang Plum Wine Co was listed as an intangible cultural heritage inheritance base in Xiangzhou district.
