An exhibition commemorating the 195th anniversary of Rong Hong (Yung Wing)'s birth launched at the Rong Hong Museum in Zhuhai's Xiangzhou district on Dec 3. It will run until Jan 3, 2024.
The exhibition features 93 sets of plates, 45 valuable documents, and over 200 historical photographs. They showcase Rong's historical contributions in promoting the transformation of modern China through the overseas education of young children during the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Rong, born in 1828 and died in 1912, was from Nanping village in Xiangshan county, which is now known as Nanping town in Xiangzhou district.
As the first Chinese student to obtain an overseas degree, Rong devoted himself to the Self-Strengthening Movement after graduating from Yale University in 1854. He helped 120 young Chinese students to study in the US, and contributed to the transformation of modern China. He is honored as the "father of overseas Chinese students."
